Sheer Color: Layered Screen Printing
Techniques
Tuition: HCAF Members $175; Non-members $190
Supply Fee $15 (to be paid to the instructor on
the first day of class) |
|
Achieve brilliant color and distinctive
patterning through repeated layers of screen
printing. Unlike paint, in which each layer
covers the layer below, the transparency of dyes
allows each layer of color and pattern to remain
visible. Participants will use a variety of
resist and masking techniques with a blank
silkscreen, including gel glue, soy wax, paper
masks, and found object stencils. Learn how an
understanding of saturation and color choice can
help you avoid a “muddy” effect. In addition to
creating “sheer” color on a medium weight
fabric, participants will explore the use of
sheer fabrics. Learn techniques for printing
multiple layers of sheers at one time, creating
several pieces of coordinated cloth. |

Vibrant Color: Combining Soy Wax and Dye for
Brilliant Results
Tuition: HCAF Members $175; Non-members $190
Supply Fee $15 (to be paid to the instructor on
the first day of class) |
|
Got soy wax? Got dye? Put the two
together in exciting combinations.
Soy wax is biodegradable and a
renewable resource. When combined
with fiber reactive dyes the results
are fabulous - intricate patterns
with the staying power of the dyes
but with an ease of wash-out
unmatched by other resists. Three
applications will be explored:
crayons, which are perfect for
rubbings, drawing and writing; hot,
colored wax, ideal for stamping and
direct application and wax paste,
perfect for stenciling. The workshop
includes ample open studio time for
experimentation with all three
applications. Additional lectures
focus on building and using a
steamer, ideas for incorporating
techniques into other surface design
processes, and an end of weekend
show and tell. |
