2010 Workshops

Plein Air Painting
Ian Roberts
October 18—22, 2010

HCAF Members $490; Non-members $535

In this workshop students will learn to:  edit the intricacies of nature into a single, powerful image block in accurate value masses quickly to form the basis of a strong composition. This means learning to 'see' in masses, in shapes, rather than outlines
create rich color, particularly in the handling of color temperature.

The goal of the workshop is twofold. One is learning to build strong compositions. This is the foundation of great painting. The second goal is to help student’s develop the insight to critique their own work more effectively at home. This makes the student more self-reliant and efficient. This painting workshop is suited to every level of experience from serious beginner to professional. Any medium can be used depending on student’s preference.

Ian Roberts graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and studied figure drawing while living in Florence, Italy. He is the author of two books, "Creative Authenticity: 16 Principles to Clarify and Deepen Your Artistic Voice" and "Mastering Composition: Techniques and Principles to Dramatically Improve Your Painting," published by North Light Books. He has also produced two videos, "Plein Air Painting" and "Mastering Composition." Roberts’ paintings can be viewed at www.ianroberts.us.
