Ancestral Masking
Ann Curtis and Derek Weaver
February 27 & 28, 2010
HCAF Members $125;
Non-members $135
Humanity has always had portraits from
the past to tell us our ancestry. Face
Casting is the oldest form of
portraiture known to Planet Earth.
Originally presented as "Death Masks,"
life casting became a handy sculptural
technique employed by artists since the
mid 1300's as a way to "flesh-out" their
great works. Using a classically simple
technique, many giants of history have
come down to us in this fashion. The
cast of the features gives us a direct
insight into the past. The shape of a
nose, the set of the eyes, all
contribute to the evolutionary path we
have traveled to arrive at this juncture
in time. |

This two-day Life Casting Workshop will
teach the numerous ways of creating
finished pieces through two molds made
from your features in step by step
instruction. These include a permanent
clay mask, the "hologram" and an
ornamented mold of your features
designed to view or wear. Please bring
any clay tools you may have. White
stoneware and plaster gauze provided,
material fee $20.00. |
