Pit Firing
Cheryl Alexander
February 6, 18 & 20, 2010
HCAF Members $200
Non-members $220
In this workshop students will create clay
sculptures in different clay bodies, and compare
results of the pit-fire technique on each. Students
may bring their own cone 5-6 clay bodies; low-fire
porcelain will be provided. Those interested in this
workshop should begin now to collect organic
materials for packing around sculptures in the pit-
fire such as dried banana peels and citrus rinds;
hardwood shavings; pine cones; horse mane and tail
hair; steel wool; copper wire; seaweed; peanut
shells, etc. Clay workers will learn how to
translate their pottery skills into sculpting
skills: carving, internal armatures, linking parts
into a whole and creating sculpture with a good
foundation that will ‘survive the fire’.
Workshop schedule:
Saturday Feb. 6th construction day; Thursday
February 18th pit firing; Saturday, February 20th
dismantle pit-fire kilns, clean, finish, display and
critique work. |

Cheryl Alexander, BS (art ed),
studied sculpture at the Southwest
School of Art and Craft with Chilean
sculptor Luis Guzman 1970-1972. She
was a recipient of the Coppini
Academy Young Artist award for her
stoneware sculpture in 1972. While
studying with WPA- era sculptress
Eugenia Everett in Sedona, Arizona,
she began experimenting with
pit-firing. Alexander loved the way
her sculptures emerged looking like
ancient artifacts. Her students
enjoy the way she provides them with
technical know-how and creativity in
equal measure.
