This
philosophy is the reverse side of
slick modernism or eighteenth
century extravagance. Wabi Sabi
relates to the natural world, the
transitory nature of life, the
imperfect, the simple, the honest.
In art, it allows us to see the
process of the artist, at times
viewing an artwork in its
incomplete, rough or unfinished form
as beautiful.
Wabi Sabi can be seen in:
The imperfection of a handmade
coffee cup;
Light falling on dewy grass;
A descriptive poem in simple
language;
An autumn leaf, disintegrating;
Saw marks on a log
This class is about art, not
philosophy; it will involve learning
to view our work as a metaphor for
simplicity and the amazing truth of
an honest, humble statement.
