Young Artists Camp is divided into four age groups: 4-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12 or older. The curriculum is TEKS-based, structured around the four basic stands: perception, creative expression, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation. Components are introduces with age appropriate activities.

In the 4-5 age group campers will be introduced to art elements: line, shape, texture, value, color and space. Children will be encouraged to relate art to everyday life and discover art in their environment, gleaning information using the five senses. In hands-on creative manner, children explore artwork in a variety of media - collage, drawing, painting, etc.

The 6-8 year olds will have an introduction to the principles of design: harmony, variety and contrast, balance, movement and dominance, as well as the art elements. Children will be given guidance to identify sensory knowledge and life experiences as sources for art expression. This class will have an introduction to art history and culture, along with the opportunity to create original artwork – drawings, paintings, constructions, fiber art, etc.

Along with art elements and the principles of design, the 9-11 year old campers will explore artistic styles: realism, impressionism, expressionism and surrealism. Discussions will delve into communicating ideas about feelings, self, family, school and community through art. Historical and cultural heritages will be explored through the understanding of art history as records of human achievement, identifying similarities and differences. Campers will combine information from direct observation, experience and imagination to create original artworks using a variety of art materials.

In the age group for 12 years and up, campers will have the opportunity to utilize the ceramic lab and the computer lab. Throughout the week, whether working with clay or creating computer-generated art, campers will review art elements, principles of design and artistic styles. Campers will learn technical skills to effectively create original artwork expressing their own ideas based on personal experience, direct observation and traditional events.

This program is supported by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
