This course intends to raise the stakes
for intermediate and advanced artists to
move beyond merely depicting the
beautiful. The aim is to create
thoughtful works with significant
meaning, to complement the beautiful
with originality and innovation.
Students will explore what it means to
be original and discover their authentic
voice concerning themes from the
intimate to the infinite through
critique, lecture and exercises.
The course explores experimenting with
established technique to bolster the
import of the subject. By now the
student is able to paint beautiful
images, but feels that there could be
more for them to say as artists than
they are getting with a habitual diet of
a comfortable aesthetic. Each person is
such a story, has so much to say. This
class will break through the conceptual
blocks that can hit an artist now and
then, by sparking new ideas and
