Day One:
Underpainting for skyscape/landscape #1
This class is not about drawing. We will
use some shortcuts to transfer a
composition to a canvas so we can get
right to applying paint. Our first
exercise will be to express a landscape
in a monochromatic scale. We will allow
it to dry and on day three we will paint
on top of the underpainting. We will
practice being generous with paint and
bold with value differences. We will
experiment with brush strokes.
Day Two:
Skyscape/landscape #2
This landscape will involve creating a
gradient in the sky and reflecting body
of water.
Using a palette knife, we will mix a big
pile of paint into several gradients for
an evening sky with clouds. Then we will
use wet into wet technique to create the
illusion of the sky, blending the colors
on the canvas. We will take plenty of
time up front to mix the paint, matching
it to our source material.
Day Three:
Finishing skyscape/landscape #1
We will play with the idea of
translucent versus opaque applications
over the established underpainting. This
will be about mixing colors and making
edges interesting and believable. |

Laura
Lewis is a landscape artist from
Lubbock who paints west Texas
scenes. That, of course, means big
skies and wide expanses. Laura has
enjoyed creative work since
childhood. A self-portrait
assignment in the third grade stands
out as her first awareness that she
had a gift for drawing. She pursued
art instruction throughout her teen
years, and had the good fortune to
study portraiture under renowned
artist Glenna Goodacre. Confidence
did not come easy, however, and
after one semester as an art major
at UT Austin, Laura changed majors
to pre-nursing and had a long career
in health professions ending with a
specialization in neurodiagnostic
testing. Throughout her years in the
medical arena, Laura continued to
paint portraits, learn print making
techniques, and study with
accomplished artists such as Paul
Milosevich, Tim High, Carroll
Collier, George Stricktland, and
others.
A honeymoon trip through Montana and
Wyoming was the catalyst for Laura’s
renewed determination to pursue
painting as a serious endeavor. The
sensation of space with solitude,
and the rhythmic elements in the
clouds and erosion patterns inspire
her to paint big landscapes with the
noticeable absence of man-made
structures.
Laura has received numerous awards
including two from national juried
shows.
The open spaces that Laura depicts
strike a chord with a lot of people
who love the great outdoors and her
paintings are part of numerous
collections across the United
States. Laura is represented in
Lubbock by The Frame Mart Gallery,
and by Kings Keepsakes in Plainview,
The Frame Shop in Post and The Mason
Gallery in Mason, Texas. Her
landscapes may be viewed on-line at
