In this
five day workshop there will be 2½ days
spent on still life and 2½ days spent on
the face and figure.
Students will gain valuable experience
in understanding more about beginning
and finishing a composition, designing
stronger paintings, learning to be more
accurate in seeing and drawing – and of
course, gaining more confidence and joy
in working with the beautiful and
versatile pastel painting medium.
Demonstrations and problem solving
techniques will get daily attention in
addition to complete technical
information about successfully working
with the pastel medium will be shared. A
slide presentation and lots of personal
assistance and encouragement at each
student’s easel will round out the
class.
THE DYNAMIC
STILL LIFE WORKSHOP
Kathleen says, “The Sill life can be
about so much more than just a
collection of things. By paying special
attention to the composition and the
elements selected, an artist can create
“little worlds” that tell stories,
provoke thought, invite the viewer to
participate, make people laugh or ponder
weightier themes. The art of the still
life continues to intrigue me for its
powerful communication abilities.”
With this in mind, our time in this
portion of the workshop will be spent in
learning about making more interesting
still life compositions that communicate
your personal point of view.
THE MORE HUMAN
FACE AND FIGURE WORKSHOP
Kathleen believes,“ The human face and
figure have enormous power to
communicate an incredible array of
emotion – our joys, our sorrows, hopes,
dreams, disappointments. We are
compelled to look at paintings of
people, because they remind us that we
are all alike, even spanning centuries,
because we feel what they have felt, we
are intrigued with thoughts of what that
painted face has experienced. Our job as
artists is to be open and sensitive to
the human lives we paint, hoping to use
our artistic skills to celebrate the
unique spirit that we explore with our
heart and mind.”
With this in mind, this portion of our
time together will be spent in learning
more about making sensitive portrait or
figure compositions that communicate not
only the beauty and humanity of the
person you are painting, but also say
something about your relationship to
that person – your personal point of
view. Students will gain experience
working from a live model.
