TILE MAKING, DECORATING AND MARKETING
May 18 - 19, 2006

This two-day lecture/demonstration shows how to make tile on the slab roller, extruder and tile press. It includes information on installation, and an extensive discussion of designing commission work, shows, setting, portfolios, and promotional literature. The second day is devoted to decorating, with a demo of Paul’s unique style of glaze painting, as well as discussion of china painting, sume painting, silkscreening and airbrushing. Also included is a slide show of Paul’s work and historical and contemporary tile work.

GLAZE CHEMISTRY - BEGINNING TO ADVANCED
May 20 - 21, 2006

A two-day lecture class that begins with the glaze materials, and such basic information as how to make glaze tests and use a gram scale. It covers firing, glaze faults, testing, and glaze mixing.  On the second day it progresses to an explanation of the Seger formula method of analyzing glaze formulas, and a demonstration of several ceramic calculation software programs. It includes a slide  show of Paul’s work. No glaze chemistry or computer experience is necessary.

Tuition: HCAF Members $65; Non-members $70
A $10 discount will be offered for those attending both Lewing workshops.


Paul Lewing has been an artist all his life, and has worked with clay and glazes since 1965.  Since 1986, Paul has worked almost exclusively on tile at two different firing temperatures.  In addition to custom murals, Paul produces a popular line of gift items and unique watercolor pencil drawings in his Seattle, WA studio. He is well-known nationally as a tile artist and ceramic glaze chemist.
