ART FOR ARTISTS is a
weekend filled with learning
opportunities for artists of all levels.
Participants choose from the diverse
selection of sessions and create their
own schedule. The relaxed atmosphere
will put even the beginner at ease with
informative lecture/slide presentations
and stress free hands-on experiences.
The intermediate, advanced and even
professional artists can enjoy the
mini-workshops for an opportunity to try
a new medium or technique. For a more
one-on-one approach participants may
choose to have a critique done of their
artwork by professional art educators.

Instructor /Class Information
Dan Burt - Dan has conducted
workshops and given painting
demonstrations all across the U.S. and
in central Italy. He has won over ninety
awards in national, regional and state
juried exhibitions. He is an elected
signature member of the American
Watercolor Society, National Watercolor
Society, Audubon Artist, Watercolor
West, the Rocky Mountain National
Watermedia Society, The Transparent
Watercolor Society and the Texas
Watercolor Society.
Susan Carlin - Susan will
demonstrate “Dual Portraiture”. Working
from a photograph, Susan will have two
portraits in progress, one in oil, one
in pastel. Susan Carlin has been
painting commissioned portraits for over
thirty years. She has always worked in
pastel, and in the last five years with
oil. Portraiture will be featured in a
two-day workshop on August 10 and 11 at

Mary Kathryn Collins - The
‘Un’Demo: Learn painting and collage
techniques using egg shells, sand,
aluminum foil, sand paper and more!
Explore using unexpected surfaces. Each
student will have the opportunity to
create a sampler of the techniques to
combine into a notebook. Mary Kathryn
holds a MFA and has taught college level
art and design for eighteen years.
Stephen Dubov - This hands-on
sculpture experience will take the wire
construction segment from his Sculpture
101 course, teaching the process and
technique while exploring the materials’
limitations and possibilities. All
supplies provided. Stephen holds a BFA
from Kansas City Art Institute and is
currently the Artist in Residence at
Studio Atelier 3D in Austin.
Lisle Drake - Lisle has had an
artistic career that has covered a
variety of fields, most recently, she
has been focused on a multi-layered
process of creating original drawings,
scanning them into digital format, then
using software tools to produce images
with strong emotional and visual appeal.
In her session, Sunday afternoon,
participants will be shown how the Brush
Tools in the Painter computer program
give amazing control over texture, plus
how Painter integrates beautifully with
Photoshop.
Thom Evans - Thom will
demonstrate his painting of sombreros
with overlapping large bold color
strokes. Evans, a professional artist
for more than 40 years now resides in
the Texas Hill Country. He has an oil
painting workshop scheduled April 23
through 25 here at HCAF. See his work at

Deb Gioia - Deb is a self-taught
sculptor whose work has been described
as "playful and whimsical". Her work
always includes stained glass and some
type of metal, such as copper, steel,
brass, etc. It is either soldered or
welded together, giving structure to her
pieces. The playfulness and whimsy come
from the colored wire, recycled items
and found objects that are incorporated
into each piece, along with a heavy dose

Linda Hammond - Linda is a member
of the Society of Layerists in
Multimedia and a Signature Member of
Texas Watercolor Society, National
Watercolor Society and the Western
Federation of Watercolor Societies.
Linda will offer a group critique
session. Participants may bring up to
three samples of artwork for review.
Bill Hildebrand - Raku and Low Fire
Techniques: Bill Hildebrand, a potter
for 25 years and Texan since ’93 will
demonstrate raku and low fire
techniques.
Linda Peyton Huff - Linda is a
professional Houston artist and has been
an instructor at The Jung Center since
1999. In a six hour session, which will
begin on Saturday morning and conclude
on Sunday morning, she will present
“Nature’s Symbols”. Natural forms will
be the inspiration for either
representational or non-representational
works on canvas or watercolor paper.
Students are free to execute their
artworks in whichever media they prefer,
i.e. watercolor, acrylics, drawing
material or a mixed media format.
Handouts covering the mythological and
historical meaning of natural forms will
be distributed to workshop participants.
J’Nil Jackson - J’Nil holds an
all-level art degree and has extensive
teaching experience in the public school
system and more recently, as a ceramics
instructor. In her Saturday session she
will present the ancient technique of
making clay roller stamps to create
textures on clay.
Mark Jackson - Ceramic artist,
Mark Jackson will demonstrate decorative
impression and textural surface
techniques on his unique wall platters.
The demonstration will include the
airbrush application of high-fire
commercial glazes for oxidation firing.
Finished samples of his wall platters
will be on display. All skill levels are
welcome. Mark will also hold an
interactive question and answer session
while demonstrating various methods of
throwing pottery on the potter’s wheel.
Emphasis will be on the aesthetics of
form and function with some hands-on
participation. Participants will receive
a free signature coffee mug while they
last.
The Johnson Creek Press - The
Printmaking Experience: This beginner
level printmaking experience led by our
own Johnson Creek Press Group will
include demos in monotype, woodcuts and
more. Hands-on printmaking projects will
enlighten students to the diversity of
printmaking techniques. This class may
be enhanced by taking “The Art of
Transparencies” with Marsha Mefferd.
Kerrville Framing - Cynthia White
of Kerrville Framing will bring samples
of frames and materials and speak about
presentation and display of artwork for
best results whether selling or
preserving your artwork is your goal.
Marsha Mefferd - Your Artwork on
a CD…You can do it!!! Go through
step-by-step procedures – from
photographing or scanning your original
artwork – downloading to Photoshop –
making adjustments – burning the CD.
This is valuable information for
entering juried shows digitally, for
printing of postcards or other marketing
materials or for recording and storing
images of your artwork. Bring 1 – 3
pieces of work, unframed is preferable.
Marsha will also present “The Art of
Transparencies.” In this session,
students will learn how to take an
object or image and print it on a
transparency that may be transferred to
another surface. This class is
recommended for those wanting to get the
full benefit of “The Printmaking
Experience”.
Jack Ramsey - Jack studied
painting at the National Academy of
Design and The Art Students’ League in
NYC; BFA and MFA degrees in Painting
from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has
taught at many prestigious schools
including the Museum of Modern Art, and
the Atlanta College of Art. Jack will
offer a group critique session focusing
on the artist’s freedom to go beyond the
‘rules’. Discussion will be centered
more on the process than the product.
Participants should bring up to three
pieces of work for critique.
Benné Rockett earned a dual
masters degree from the College of Notre
Dame in 1990. She is currently the
director of @IDEA, an organization that
promotes exploration of issues
significant to women artists. In her
Saturday afternoon session she will
present a hands-on group project in
casting and paper sculpture.
David Smith - David is Assistant
Professor of Art and graphic design
teacher at Schreiner University . In his
Sunday session he will do a presentation
of Christo’s “Gates Project” that Smith
helped to install in Central Park. Items
from the ‘Gates’ will be displayed plus
there will be a few give-a-ways. David
will talk about Christo’s upcoming
installation, Over the River,
that is to be on the Arkansas River in
Colorado. David will have information
about how individuals can get involved
in the Christo projects.
Rivers Edge Gallery - Everything
You Wanted To Know About Giclee But Were
Afraid To Ask: Representatives from
River’s Edge Gallery will bring samples
of giclee prints, samples of papers and
canvases available for giclee prints.
They will explain the process and
educate the artists on the types of
image files needed for reproduction.
Letitia Rogers - Letitia has been
a weaver for over 30 years. She studied
at the Santa Fe Center for Fiber Arts
and learned from such well known weavers
as Alberte Coopman, Joanne Hall,
Katherine Sylvan, and Joanne Tallarovic.
She will present a hands-on experience
in loom weaving. There will be a group
project and everyone will have something
to take home.
Sam Williams - Triple Weave
Baskets, Beautiful and Functional: Sam
Williams, a loom weaver and basket maker
for 20 years, and Texan since 1950 will
demonstrate the triple weave technique.
Students will have the opportunity to
participate by working on a basket with
Sam. |
