Set in Truvy's Beauty Salon, Steel Magnolias is the story of six women in a small Louisiana town and how their lives intertwine. Over a three year period, the women share joy, laughter, jokes, recipes, and sorrow. The comedy-drama, based on the author's experience with the death of his sister, illustrates the strong bond between the women - the steel magnolias. The 1987 Off-Broadway play was made into a movie starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts in 1989.
